Cloud rendering Revit: 3 things under one name

Cloud rendering Revit services offer 3 different workflows: Autodesk calculates your prepared scene, a render farm calculates a specialist's scene, or an AI service generates an image from your view. The choice depends on what is blocking you: your machine or the preparation.

I build a tool in the third category. Its limits belong alongside its uses.

When the laptop cannot do the work

A student on Reddit, with a finished Revit model and a deadline: "my computer can’t handle anything like Lumion or D5." Someone else in a visualization forum: "My PC would take 2 hours to render just one image lol".

A stronger machine makes sense if you render every week from a live model. An architect carrying a heavy gaming laptop between offices wrote: "I wish that instead, I got myself a good desktop setup and a laptop I could remote into it with".

But many practices do not render every week. One architect running a small office wrote:

I haven’t seen the need to buy “workstations”

Renting computing power can help that office. It still leaves work on the architect's desk.

What cloud rendering moves

Rendering a Revit model has 2 parts. First, preparation: camera, materials, sun position, light fixtures and entourage. Then calculation: the processor turns that scene into pixels.

A conventional cloud renderer takes the calculation. Your machine is free again, and several views can run at once. On a weak laptop, that can be the difference between an image and no image.

Preparation stays with you. So does the revision loop. An architect who later built his own tool described it:

"It was waiting 3 hours, showing the client, and hearing: “Can we make the wall warmer?” Then exporting everything again."

The wall still has to be changed, the view sent again, and the job paid and queued again.

Moving the render means the same prepared scene is calculated on someone else's computer. Removing the preparation means there is no scene to prepare. Cloud rendering for Revit is sold under both meanings, and they fix different problems.

Cloud rendering Revit options: 3 different workflows

1. Autodesk's Render in Cloud

You start from Revit's View tab. The job runs on Autodesk's servers, and finished images arrive in an online gallery tied to your account. No plugin, second application or file conversion. Cloud rendering is also the rendering route Autodesk points Revit LT users to.

The engine family and preparation remain. Materials, sun, artificial lights and camera require the same work as a local render, covered in how to render in Revit. A default scene rendered in the cloud still looks like a default scene.

It is metered by a usage allowance. Terms have changed over the years, so check the current terms in your Autodesk account before planning a project around it.

This route fits a finished model with many views. A set of 12 views uses the same model and materials, giving you consistent output while you stay inside Revit.

2. Render farms and vendor clouds for offline engines

This category serves craft engines such as V-Ray. Some vendors run a cloud service for their engine; independent farms accept scenes from several engines. You prepare the scene, upload it, pay for computing time and download the frames.

The farm only calculates. Materials, lighting, composition, assets and test renders remain the visualization specialist's work. The farm frees that person's workstation.

This route fits the flagship image, competition board, development marketing image or animation. When the image itself is the product, craft rendering sets the quality bar. If nobody in your office has that training, budget for a studio. The numbers are in architectural rendering cost.

3. AI rendering services that work from an image

These services receive a screenshot or image export of your Revit view, even a white working view. A model trained on photography supplies materials, light, vegetation and sky. Your view supplies the design and viewpoint.

There is no scene to prepare and no GPU requirement. The service works from the image rather than calculating a scene from geometry. The approach also works before a model exists, from a hand drawing: sketch to render.

An image model interprets your view, and interpretation can drift. Openings move, a roofline softens, furniture appears where an aisle should be. An architect on Reddit who tested several AI tools wrote: "with each variation, they make more and more mistakes."

SecondRender, which I build

SecondRender works from a screenshot or image export of your view. You choose style, lighting, season and environment. It runs in the cloud, so any laptop is enough. An image takes about 30 seconds. There is no Revit plugin, and it does not read your BIM data. You keep working in Revit.

In all 3 routes, the project leaves your network. Some clients and contracts do not allow that. Ask before you upload, whichever cloud it is.

How to choose on a normal office laptop

If materials are set and views are chosen, Autodesk's Render in Cloud handles the remaining calculation. For a brochure cover or competition image, use a trained visualization specialist; the farm is their decision more than yours.

AI fits when preparation is the obstacle: the model is rough on purpose, a decision is needed this week, and nobody has 2 days for materials and lights. It pairs with design options in Revit, because you can show alternatives without preparing a scene for each. You still have to check each result.

Is there a cloud-based Revit?

Not in the sense of Revit running in a browser. Revit itself is desktop software for Windows. Autodesk offers cloud services around it, including model storage, sharing and rendering. Some firms run Revit on virtual desktops so a light laptop only displays the session. Autodesk's offering changes, so check what is current before you decide.

What is the best rendering program for Revit?

It depends on the phase. For weekly client reviews from a live model, architects most often name real-time engines such as Enscape, Twinmotion, D5 and Lumion. For a flagship image, a craft engine such as V-Ray in trained hands. For early decisions without a GPU, Autodesk's cloud rendering or an AI service working from a screenshot.

How to do cloud in Revit?

Open a 3D view, go to the View tab and choose Render in Cloud. Sign in with your Autodesk account, select the views, set output quality and size, and start the job. You can keep working while it runs; results arrive in the online render gallery. Menus and options differ by version, so follow the dialog your version shows.

Is there an AI render tool for Revit?
